Free Society - the best soultion
Interview with dr Shawn RItenour
As a libertarian who actually knows bureaucracy from the inside (because of your work at Bureau of Labor Statistics) would you say that such institutions (that collect statistics) are absolutely useless or maybe there is some reason for their existence?
I would say that in general they don’t really serve a helpful purpose. I think that in the best case scenario the statistics, by the time they’re collected, if you’re going do it right, have to be collected and then you have to review it to make sure that your statistics are fairly accurate.
The themes of the free market economy and State in the encyclicals of Benedict XVI
The modern times drawn the Church into a discussion on the meaning and purpose of the free market economy and the role of a State. The Church considers these subjects first of all because she offers her partnership to participate in the world’s attempt to create a better social order. The Church offers her help in order to contribute to the development of the human family, based on the truth about the human person because, as pope Paul VI says, the Church is “experienced in human affairs” (PP 13). Eighteen years after the social encyclical letter Centesimus Annus of John Paul II, Pope Benedict issued Caritas in Veritate in the summer of 2009.

Sirico, prof. Leszek Balcerowicz, Dr. Mart Laar, Fr. Maciej Zięba, prof. John Kłos, Mr. Andrzej Baranski and John O'Sullivan. The conference was organized by the Acton Institute from the USA and PAFERE Foundation.
Jan Klos: Different Popes, Same Message
Is the social teaching of Benedict XVI consistent with that of his predecessor? One might conclude on the basis of some of the media debate surrounding Benedict’s recent encyclical Caritas in Veritate that Benedict XVI has deviated from the course taken during John Paul II’s pontificate. Such a conclusion is preposterous.
A Tribute to the Polish People
The cause of liberty saw memorable highs and unconscionable lows in 1989. Surely that year will be best remembered as the year Soviet hegemony over central Europe disintegrated, paving the way for the dissolution of the Soviet Union itself in 1991. Free people everywhere should toast the brave people of one nation in particular–Poland–for the pivotal role they played in those momentous events.

PAFERE Foundation among sixteen think tanks awarded in 2008 edition of Templeton Prizes
ARLINGTON, VA -- Think tanks from nine countries have received recognition as winners within the 2008 Templeton Freedom Awards program, the Atlas Economic Research Foundation announced today. Representing four continents, the 16 recipients were chosen from over 170 applications from 58 countries, by an independent panel of expert judges. Between them is our Foundation. Named for the late investor and philanthropist, Sir John Templeton, the awards program was established in 2003 to recognize the contributions of independent think tanks to the understanding of freedom. This year, three new prize categories were added to the program to honor special achievements using Innovative Media, by a University-based Center, and by a Young Institute.
New study: EU climate package to cost EU 73bn euro per year by 2020
Open Europe has produced the first independent estimate of the cost and wider effects of the EU's new package of climate change measures, currently under negotiation. The outcome of the package is of particular concern at a time when Europe stands on the brink of an economic slowdown, and in some member states, recession. The plan is the most ambitious EU programme since the launch of the euro. The package, which sets a 20% target for overall emissions reduction by 2020, includes binding targets for 20% of energy to be sourced from renewables and for 10% of transport fuels to come from biofuels. The package will also make a number of important changes to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, raising concerns over the continuing viability of certain heavy industries in Europe .
Thomas E. Woods: Beyond Distributism
When the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet empire began to collapse, decent people everywhere rejoiced. Central economic planning was widely discredited around the world. Yet the triumph of capitalism did not go undisputed. Although the market's critics acknowledged the mortal blow socialism had suffered following the collapse of the economies of Eastern Europe, they denied that the free market was the only remaining alternative. The market, they insisted, had problems of its own. Some of these critics write as Catholics in the distributist tradition. Distributism, made popular by early twentieth-century British Catholics Hilaire Belloc and G. K. Chesterton, is a variant of corporatism, a system of political economy born in the wake of the French Revolution that sought the resurrection of various corporate bodies, such as the guilds, that the revolution had suppressed. Corporatists sought to manage economic competition, which they viewed as destructive and destabilizing, by grouping occupations into self-regulating trade associations and granting the central state a supervisory and coordinating role over business and labor.
The Founder and President of PAFERE among the members of Mont Pelerin Society
With particular pride and joy we would like to announce, that the founder and director of our Foundation has been nominated for membership in the Mont Pelerin Society (MPS) by two members of this honorable circle of the worldwide economic freedom champions. Subsequently, the MPS Board of Directors in Tokyo, on September 12, 2008, (during the general meeting of Mont Pelerin Society members, which took place between 6th and 12th September 2008), decided to welcome him as a member of MPS.. After being informed by MPS, Mr. Jan Małek has said: It is, for me, a great honor and distinction, particularly that the members of MPS are world-renowned economists, while the Polish members of this prestigious Association number only a few people. I am convinced that this message will contribute to the growth of social interest of the aims and activities of the Polish-American Foundation for Economic Research and Education PAFERE, which has been bound with me.
Interview with Christian Michel
This is Your first time in Poland?
No, no, I’ve been to Poland many times. In the early days after the… the post-Soviet era – ’92-’93, and again more recently, not to Warsaw but to Krakow – so I can see, certainly in Warsaw, how the city has changed between 1992-1993 and today. It’s very spectacular. At the time it was grey, it was drab, it was really… it had the feeling of a very boring place. Today, and today’s not sunny and so on, but it’s certainly a vibrant place full of colour, full of young people in the street, advertising, you know, shops, things like that. No, it’s great, absolutely great. And the old buildings have been redone and the appear in all their glory, it’s wonderful.
MART LAAR: Stalinism Was Just as Bad as Nazism
Last week Russia furiously attacked President Bush for his proclamation on Captive Nations Week (July 20-July 26), which was established to raise awareness of countries living under communist and other oppressive regimes. Mr. Bush said that, "In the 20th century, the evils of Soviet communism and Nazi fascism were defeated and freedom spread around the world as new democracies emerged."
The Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that treating Nazi fascism and Soviet communism as "a single evil" was an insult that "hurt the hearts" of World War II veterans in Russia and in allied countries, including the United States. "While condemning the abuse of power and unjustified severity of the Soviet regime's internal policies, we nevertheless can neither treat indifferently attempts to equate Communism and Nazism nor agree that they were inspired by the same ideas and aims," the ministry said in a statement.
Alejandro Antonio Chafuen: Sir John Templeton (1912-2008)
I believe it was 1991 when I had the first opportunity to spend some quality time with Sir John Templeton. I had the reasonable nervousness of meeting with a legend, as I sa across from him at his office in the Bahamas. It took him only a few seconds to notice that the sun, shining through the windows, was reflecting on my eyes. Sir John immediately stood on a chair, and adjusted the screen, practicing what he preached about being humble and caring for even the smallest things in life. I also recall seeing him on my flight to the Mont Pèlerin Society meeting in Mexico. He did not see me for I was sitting several rows behind him. I remember that he was flying on economy class and handling his luggage and life like any other well-adjusted human being. My wife, who was with me, immediately reflected on how refreshing it was to see someone with the stature of John Templeton still practice the Christian virtue of detachment.

Vaclav Klaus: "Europe's big test: why the euro will not help"
Ten years have passed since the founding of the European Central Bank but it seems as if it was yesterday. This was the last crucial step towards the introduction of the euro, a currency that was adopted by many European countries. With little nostalgia, these countries have forgotten their marks, francs, lire and pesetas.
A big celebration of this anniversary is being planned by the ECB and I admit that there is a reason for it. The bank has chosen well-established methods of central banking and performed relatively well. It has quickly created a functioning monetary policy strategy. It has managed to keep inflation under control and by doing so has contributed to the recognition of the euro as a true international currency. In spite of all this, it is no great success. Why?
Paweł Toboła-Pertkiewicz: Leave the Family alone!
The world is founded on the family. In spite of this, the State is trying to replace the family, although no state institution is able to replace the closeness, love, and happiness, that parents give to their children. Dr. Michael Miller of The Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty says that more and more people demand governmental care, willing to place their freedom and, consequently, responsibility for their families in the hands of state institutions. It is a very dangerous tendency because it leads to a destruction of the institution of family. The State instead of the Family French traveler and writer Alexis de Tocqueville wrote in the XIXth Century that "the State assumed the role of the family so no wonder that everyone who is in need calls the State for help". Formerly, when people were in trouble they asked their family, relatives, and neighbors, for help. Today they turn to the State and its specialized institutions. Examples that illustrate the depth of the interference of the State into family life are numerous.
Interview with Michał Wojciechowski, Lay Professor of Theology, by Paweł Toboła-Pertkiewicz
What is the condition of the family in Poland? It is not good. The decline of the birthrate in recent years may serve as sufficient proof of that fact. A typical urban family equals one set of parents and one child. Even from a purely biological point of view, if people do not reproduce, then there must be something wrong with the society and the family unit. Other significant facts that point to this are the increasing numbers of divorces and the increasing amount of people who are lonely. What are the reasons for this situation? The moral reasons are the tens of years that people have had accessibility to abortion and divorces. The economic reasons, taxation and insurance systems, are also weakening the family. Both types of reasons are the result of detrimental policies from those who have wielded the power. Who do you mean? The killing of millions of conceived children is a crime of the European left-wingers. The economic weakening of the family is characteristic of the whole Western world.
Libertarian International Conference in Warsaw
An Invitation to the Libertarian International 2008 Spring Conference
Dear Friends of Liberty,
The 28-29 June Conference in Warsaw will be the most exciting event of the libertarian year. It is the moment we all wait for, the opportunity to meet new friends from across Europe, to catch up with old ones and to recharge our intellectual batteries. This year the Conference will feature a wonderful mix of speakers we know and love, and inspiring students and scholars, who will be the voice of our movement in the years to come. Be the first to meet and discuss with these young radicals. We have an impressive venue in the Kazimierzowski Palace and there will be plenty of time for studying and for socialising.

Daniel Mitchell: Iceland Comes in From the Cold With Flat Tax Revolution
by Daniel J. Mitchell This article appeared in The Business on March 21, 2007.
Listen up, Gordon Brown and George Osborne. Iceland has joined a growing list of nations that have sharply cut their corporate tax rates and adopted flat-rate individual income taxes, with hugely positive consequences on economic performance. With the expiration of a surtax last year, individuals now pay a flat rate of 22.75% of their taxable income to the central government. Granted, Iceland's system is not a pure, academic flat tax. Local governments also tax income at a single rate, pushing the combined flat rate up to 36%. Not only is the rate high, but Iceland also retains some double taxation of saving and investment, as well as a few special tax preferences.
